A 47-year-old Peanuts comic strip sold at auction for $26,450 earlier this month. The four panel strip features Linus, Peppermint Patty and Snoopy, who is wearing goggles, and was valued between  $15,000-$20,000. “We’ve sold many original Peanuts strips in previous sales, so we knew this one would do well,” said Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions.

Schultz produced over 18,000 such strips during his long and highly successful carrer. If each piece of original art is worth a similar amount, then the total worth comes in at around $468 million. (That’s £282 Million for those of you in the UK).

The strip was the most expensive item in a multi-estate auction held in New York, and was mostly filled with Golden Age comics’ memorabilia and collectible sports pieces. Other items on the block included a massive porcelain piece – six feet across and four feet high – showing Scrooge McDuck and other members of the Duck clan in a stretch limousine and a similar statue of the Duck clan trying to stay on top of a charging rhinoceros. Both rare pieces were designed by Eisner Hall of Fame artist Carl Barks, and they both fetched $13,800.  An original painting used for the cover of the March 1974 Tales of the Zombie #4 by Boris Vallejo went for $7,763.
