Comic strip hero Flash Gordon celebrates his 80th Anniversary this year, and Dynamite Studios have decided to celebrate this milestone by launching a brand new comic book series featuring the pulp sci-fi hero this April.

Batman and X-Men writer Jeff Parker will be creating the scripts for the series, and the Deadpool artist Evan “Doc” Shaner will be illustrating the work. Rocketeer colourist Jordie Bellaire will also add her considerable talent to the book, giving the work a much anticipated ‘pulp action’ feel.

The storyline will follow on from the popular Kings Watch mini-series, a comic book which delighted nostalgic Defenders of The Earth fans as it saw Flash Gordon team up both Mandrake The Magician and The Phantom to fend off an alien invasion. The adventure will begin on Mongo, the home planet of Flash Gordon’s greatest enemy Ming the Merciless and his awful inter-planetary swarms of terror.

Jeff Parker said “We’re bringing Flash back for a new audience.  It’s over-the-planet high action and adventure where Flash’s spirit and optimism are as powerful as anything the forces of Ming the Merciless can dish out. We also have some of my favourite artists contributing covers – make no mistake, this book is going to absolutely kill!”

A large number of variant covers (samples below) and similar promotional gimmicks will also be available when the book comes out in April. Dynamite has been building up to this launch for some time with extremely high quality books such as The Rise of Ming and Kings Watch. It looks like there is still a lot of life left in this extremely senior comic book hero, with many more adventures to come.
