Beasts of Burden News

I think it’s true to say that many comic book fans would agree that Evan Dorkin’s and Jill Thompson’s BEASTS OF BURDEN is one of the best looking comic books to grace the local comic emporium shelves. Unfortunately fans of this Dark Horse title have to content themselves with the occasional mini-series and one-shot.

Writer Evan Dorkin told Comic Book Resources that he would be happy to work on the book full time and that he has the entire story arc already planned out. There’s just one problem though, artist Jill Thompson’s schedule.

Basically, when Jill’s available to work on the book we work on the book,” Dorkin explains.

I have three notebooks of material right now, the entire storyline is pretty much sketched out, with room for diversions and side-trips. If I had my way I’d be working on BEASTS full-time, it’s my favourite project and the one I’m always thinking about. It’s a labour-intensive book and Jill’s in high demand so it takes a while for us to get these stories out there.

Dorkin adds, “I wish we were on a regular schedule but unfortunately I don’t see that ever happening.

BEASTS OF BURDEN will return with the HUNTERS AND GATHERERS one-shot next week, its first release since 2012.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with BEASTS OF BURDEN it’s the story of Burden Hill and its defenders against the supernatural. The town at first glance looks to be the epitome of the idyllic suburb, but unbeknownst to its human populace the place is rife with all manner of supernatural menaces, both great and small. Werewolves, a haunted doghouse, witches’ covens, a pack of canine zombies and less easily defined things that go bump in the night wreak havoc just under the radar of man’s perception, but do not go unnoticed by the unlikeliest occult protectors of all: a pack of dogs and a stray cat. These four-footed paranormal investigators, occasionally aided by the shaman like “wise dogs” trained in the arcane arts, take on all comers. This turns out to be no easy task, as they soon encounter demonic cannibal frogs, tortured spirits, a secret rat society, and a bizarre and deadly resurrection in the Burden Hill cemetery-events which lead to fear and heartbreak as the four-legged heroes discover that the evil within Burden Hill is growing and on the move. Can our heroes overcome these supernatural menaces? Can evil be defeated by a paranormal team that doesn’t have opposable thumbs?

An animated film is also in development with Shane Acker attached as director.
