With production having started earlier this week on the third of the relaunched Star Trek franchise, now comes word on a fourth film in the series.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Paramount is already looking ahead to another Star Trek film, with both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto now contracted for a further film. The duo, of course, are the current incarnations of James T. Kirk and Spock. Both Pine and Quinto renegotiated their initial contracts in order to do a third film, and it’s being reported that there’s now an option in place for a fourth film. The duo appear to be the only two members of the principal Star Trek cast to have such options in place.

Other key cast members – Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Simon Pegg – are not presently signed on for a fourth Star Trek film, although this can obviously be rectified with new/extended contracts.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that there’s a rumour doing the rounds that the next Star Trek film, the third in the relaunched series and one that will see Idris Elba as the ‘big bad’, is to be called Star Trek Beyond.

Regardless of the title, the next Star Trek movie is currently set for a July 8th, 2016 release, which coincides with the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
