It’s been rumoured for a while now, but Deadline is reporting that Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to play Baron Mordo in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange.

Ejiofor is best known for his Oscar-nominated turn in 12 Years a Slave, whereas Mordo is a character who debuted back in Strange Tales #111 as a rogue student of The Ancient One. Mordo’s dastardly ways and betrayal were key in the ascension of Stephen Strange to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme. Of course, Mordo isn’t one to go down without a fight and so often brings black magic and demons to the table with him.

Now whilst the comic book Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo is arguably Strange’s most infamous nemesis, it’s believed that this cinematic version of the character may be tweaked a little bit. As well as possibly being an amalgamation of a couple of characters, there’s a very good chance that Mordo will start of as an ally of Strange’s before then turning to the dark side.

Whilst Ejiofor’s inclusion has yet to be made official, it seems a done deal at this stage. He’ll join a cast that currently includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.

To be directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange is currently set for a November 4th, 2016 release.
