This past Friday was, of course, Friday the 13th – a date engraved in the minds of many a horror hound – and so many of you have likely spent your weekend revisiting the blood-stained antics of Jason Voorhees, be that through one of the twelve movies that are out there or possibly even through the impressive Friday the 13th video game that’s now available. While the latest cinematic outing for Jason seems to be stuck in development hell right now, we’re pleased to say that a new fan film has surfaced that should have longtime fans of the franchise shrieking in delight.

The guys over at Bloody-Disgusting first brought this to light, so we can’t claim any credit there. We simply saw this fan film and felt it was our duty to help share the love (and terror!). From Womp Stomp Films and director Vincente DiSanti comes a 50-minute feature titled Never Hike Alone; a picture that also happens to feature the return of a franchise favourite. We won’t spoil the surprise on that point, but longtime Friday the 13th fans will certainly get a kick out of the whole thing.

Plot-wise, Never Hike Alone follows Andrew Leighty’s Kyle McLeod as he discover the remains of the infamous Camp Crystal Lake. Deciding to ignore all of the old tales and supposed ghost stories, Kyle decides to take a closer look at the locale for himself. Oh Kyle, you silly, silly fella…

The official blurb on the brilliant fan flick reads:

A fan tribute to Friday the 13th, Never Hike Alone follows an adventure blogger, Kyle McLeod, who uncovers the long lost remains of Camp Crystal Lake while on a solo backpacking trip. Ignoring the campfire tales from his childhood, Kyle’s search turns deadly when he makes the grave mistake of crossing the path of Camp Blood’s legendary mass murderer, Jason Voorhees. Stranded in the forest with Jason on his heels, Kyle must push his survival skills to their limits if he hopes to survive the night. Otherwise, he’ll wind up as another lost victim of the cursed camp.

At this point, it’s been eight years since Marcus Nisepl’s Friday the 13th remake, and the last word was that the franchise was getting set for another reboot, relaunch, rejig or whatever phrase just so happens to be hip these days. There were, at one time at least, plans to do a found-footage-esque movie, but that idea thankfully seems to have been dropped. Then there was the booked-in release date of this past Friday, October 13th, 2017 for a film apparently to be titled Friday the 13th: Camp Blood – The Death of Jason Voorhees. Obviously, that movie hasn’t seen the light of day, and that was because Paramount scrapped the project after Rings disappointed at the box office. Currently, the rights for the franchise are set to return to New Line and Warner Brothers next year, and there are still plans to see Jason return to the big screen at some point down the line. Just when that is, we’ll have to wait and see.

Luckily for Friday the 13th fans, though, the tense, tight and atmospheric Never Hike Alone is here to satiate your appetite for now. And, truth be told, this fan-made film is actually better than several of the official entries in the Friday the 13th franchise. We’ll let you be the judge, of course, and you can find Never Hike Alone in the player below:
