Only last week, there were stories claiming that Channing Tatum was about to walk away from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off, Gambit. Well today brings word that the actor has finally signed on for the film.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that Tatum has indeed signed on to both star and produce Gambit. Despite signing the deal, the report does claim that there were indeed some hitches during the negotiations, although Tatum finally penning the contract was supposedly never seriously in doubt. The actor himself, of course, had verbally agreed to the role many months ago, but now he’s signed on the dotted line.

With Hugh Jackman soon to finally hang up the claws with a third and final solo Wolverine movie, the X-Men universe could certainly do with a charismatic and cool character (hey Deadpool!) to fill the Logan-shaped hole that it will soon find itself with. Well, that is unless Fox moves to recast Wolverine, although we’d like to think that they would maybe hold off on using the character for a few years at this point. After all, we’ve seen Wolvie in seven movies to date, with X-Men: Apocalypse and a third solo film on the way for the character.

In terms of Gambit, the film already has Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Rupert Wyatt on board to direct from a script by RoboCop scribe Josh Zetumer, itself based on a treatment from the legendary Chris Claremont. Tatum, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Reid Carolin will be producing.

Gambit is currently set to start shooting this October ahead of an October 7th, 2016 release.
