Any British based fan of sci-fi will be painfully aware of the lack of their favourite genre on the small screen. While DOCTOR WHO may tick a lot of boxes, it’s not for everyone and certainly not the only flavour in this (admittedly bad) culinary analogy. If 2006’s dreadful HYPERDRIVE series left you with cold feet, SPACE ARK might just win you back; provided it’s picked up, of course.

It may still be in development, but Channel 4’s sci-fi comedy is definitely one to get your hopes up for. The pilot stars a refreshingly understated cast, made up of Georgia King, Tom Stourton, Justin Edwards, Alex Beckett, Ricky Grover and Nico Tatarowicz.

The official synopsis reads:

It’s 6 months, 1 week, and 4 days since the earth was destroyed by an asteroid. 200 humans survive on board a huge ‘Space Ark’. Their mission? To find a new planet where the human race can be re-established. The ship is populated by the finest minds the earth had to offer, plus an inept crew, an android-bear pilot and a member of the public who won his place by lottery. In the pilot episode the crew encounter a seemingly friendly alien race, whose space craft has broken down. What could possibly go wrong?

Whiffs of RED DWARF and STAR TREK are always welcomed here, and an android-bear pilot is worth the admission price alone. We can only hope the good folks at Channel 4 see sense and pick up the pilot.
