In some surprising (and potentially brilliant) news, it’s been announced that the famed Carry On franchise is being resurrected.

A staple of British film for many a decade, the last Carry On film was released a whole 24 years ago. But now, there’s two new entries confirmed for the series, with the first of those to be titled Carry On Doctors. The new film will be penned by Tim Dawson and Susan Nickson, the pair behind Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

On this news, Susan Nickson said, “I’m thrilled to be involved in perhaps the biggest comedy franchise in Britain. I grew up watching these films, and to be working on this project feels like coming home. They’re peculiarly British but the appeal of the humour and the ever present message that good people always win is absolutely global.”

Following Carry On Doctors will be Carry On Campus. No casting details are known for either movie at this stage, although Carry On historian Robert Ross, who will be serving as an advisor on Doctors (and presumably on Campus), has revealed that the films will be “crammed full of beloved comedy actors”.

Discussing Carry On Doctors, Ross elaborated, “The saucy world of bedpans and thermometers has been an integral part of the Carry Ons for well over 50 years. Now, as the series carries on into the 21st century, Carry On Doctors returns to hospital with a cast crammed of beloved comedy actors and a hilarious script that will have you in stiches. With a kiss to the past and a firm finger on the pulse, it’s time to Carry On. Again.”

Brian Baker, a close friend of original producer Peter Rogers, will serve as executive producer on these new entries, and he said, “I’m very excited for the project to go into production and to honour Peter’s legacy. Peter Rogers was a cornerstone of the British film industry for many years and it is a privilege to continue the Carry On tradition.”

The Carry On franchise began life way back in 1958 with Carry On Sergeant, featuring future series mainstays such as Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor and Hattie Jacques. To date there have been 31 Carry On movies, four Christmas specials, a TV series, and even Carry On stage plays, with the last movie entry coming with 1992’s Carry On Columbus, featuring names such as Rik Makall, Jim Dale, Leslie Phillips and June Whitfield.

As ever, expect more on all of this as it develops.
