Speculation has emerged that a Captain Britain TV series might be in production. Although nothing has actually been officially announced, artist Ciara McAvoy posted a tweet sharing some in-progress poster art of the character’s Union Jack costume, accompanied by a somewhat unambiguous comment of “Who will be playing Brian Braddock in the upcoming TV series”.

Created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe in 1976 as a UK analogue of Captain America, Brian Braddock was the scion of an aristocratic family from Essex who is gifted the Amulet of Right by the sorcerer Merlyn. Imbued with superhuman powers to defend the laws of Britain, he would often come up against counterterrorism organisation S.T.R.I.K.E. (the UK version of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and ultimately became the leader of Excalibur, a British equivalent of the X-Men. You may notice a pattern emerging. Also, in some often forgotten history he is the twin brother of Psylocke, who was originally a supporting character in the series before her integration into the X-Men (even assuming the Captain Britain mantle herself for a time).

While it seems unlikely that word of the series would emerge without an official release, since McAvoy’s tweet hasn’t been removed we can only assume that the show’s producers have no issue with the speculation. As such, it could be a non-committal teaser to test reactions and gauge the potential audience for the series, like what happened with the “accidental” leaking of the Deadpool test footage.

Expect more as this develops.
