With last March seeing the first rumblings of a Cannonball Run remake/reboot happening, now comes an update on who will be directing this redo.

As per Deadline, Warner Brothers has moved to bring in Central Intelligence’s Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct this new take on an old favourite. This comes after last year had Get Hard’s Etan Cohen lined up to helm the redo, with that obviously now not the case. In addition to Turber, Night at the Museum’s Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon have been brought in to pen the script. All three have previously worked together on Choose Your Own Adventure, although that picture has to actually be made at this point.

No major details are known on this new Cannonball Run just yet, bar the early word being that this is being labelled a relaunch rather than a direct remake. As for a title, it’s being suggested that the film may just be titled Cannonball.

The original 1981 movie was classified as an “illegal cross-country race where the participants were not above playing dirty tricks on one another”, and the film was crammed with an all-star cast consisting of the likes of Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Chan, and Adrienne Barbeau. Cannonball Run and its 1984 sequel were directed by stuntman Hal Needham, and a third film, Speed Zone, was released in 1989.
