In the murky subgenre of shark movies, Chris Kentis’ Open Water is one of the best films out there. And now, it’s been revealed that this year’s Cage Dive will actually be classified as the third film in this series.

Previously, 2006’s Adrift was rebranded as Open Water 2: Adrift and was loosely labelled a follow-up to Kentis’ 2003 picture. Now, Lionsgate has picked up the UK and US distribution rights for Gerald Rascionato’s Cage Drive and rebranded it as Open Water: Cage Dive.

The current synopsis on this latest foray into the shark-infested reaches of the ocean reads:

Cage Dive follows three American tourists making an audition tape of a shark cage dive for a reality TV show. A catastrophic turn of events leaves them stranded in the waters of South Australia surrounded by hungry great white sharks.

As a sucker for any and all shark movies, here at Moonbase Alpha we’re hugely excited to see Open Water: Cage Dive when it’s finally released later this year.
