Narcos’ Boyd Holbrook has landed the ‘big bad’ gig in James Mangold’s upcoming sequel to The Wolverine.

Currently dubbed simply Wolverine 3, Deadline is reporting that the movie will see Holbrook play a character described as “a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise who is set against Wolverine.”

It seems like forever there’s been rumours and speculation that the movie will be a loose adaptation of the Old Man Logan comic book arc, although now there’s also some suggestions that we may even get a more adult take on the whole Weapon X side of things. Given how 20th Century Fox are now open to an R-rated Logan movie, particularly in the aftermath of the huge success of Deadpool, it could well be that we get to see a more vicious and bloody taken on some of what we’ve seen in X2 and to a lesser extent in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Basically, how Wolvie became a living weapon.

As far as Old Man Logan goes, it is seemingly impossible to do a direct adaptation of that particularly fan-favourite story. From Mark Miller and Steve McNiven, that eight-issue tale was set 50+ years in the future and saw a post-apocalyptic United States that was split up into villain-ran territories. The problem with doing an honest-to-goodness adap of this story is that key to the film are Hawkeye and the incestuous new generation of Hulks. Obviously, the cinematic rights for Hawkeye and Hulk (and presumably his inbred family tree) rest over with Marvel Studios and Disney, meaning Fox would have to replace these characters if they were to go the Old Man Logan route.

All that we do know about Wolverine 3 at this stage is that Patrick Stewart’s Professor X will be helping out Hugh Jackman’s Logan with whatever issues crop up. Additionally, the film is due to start shooting in May, with production to be set up in New Mexico and New Orleans.

At present, James Mangold’s Wolverine 3 is set to be released on March 3rd, 2017.
