Doctor Geof Wins Reader's Choice Award

Doctor Geof is making sure 2014 is the year of Steampunk after picking up the award for Best Steampunk Periodical for his Steampunk Literary Review.

Now in its third year, the Readers Choice Awards are organised by the Steampunk Chronicle, a worldwide platform which celebrates the best of art, music, literature and design in this increasingly popular genre.

Over the course of ten years, Doctor Geof has built an extensive repertoire of Steampunk artwork, becoming a leading figure of the genre and the UK’s foremost Steampunk artist known for his unique series of posters, portraits, embroidered badges and comics. Most recently his work was incorporated into the Longitude Punk’d exhibition at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and later this summer he will be hosting solo exhibition in the Cutty Sark.

Award Winning Steampunk Literary Review

Also known as Dr Geof Banyard, his work explores the fictional possibilities of science and history often bordering on the ridiculous as work like the Steampunk Literary Review shows. Doctor Geof said: “I like examining old design and ideology in the light of the new, which is probably why many aspects of my work tap closely into the Steampunk movement. I was a physicist who had recently completed a PhD, but I always wanted to make comics and draw. After my first comic it all slowly went somewhere and the more I did comics the more I started to enjoy drawing Steampunk related artwork, which tied in to the physics side of things remarkably well.”

One of the original founders of the Leeds Steampunk Market, Doctor Geof is fascinated by military history and this is where he draws much of his inspiration for his work. His popularity is such that fans have even created the First Tea Company, an entirely non-military organisation which plays on Doctor Geof’s other love – tea.

Doctor Geof is a long-time fan of and exhibitor at MCM London Comic Con and MCM Expos around the country, known for his on-stand portraiture and dedication to many cups of tea. Doctor Geof and his award-winning Steampunk Literary Review can be found on Stand 481 in the heart of the Comic Village this May.
