Ever since Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow debuted in IRON MAN 2, there’s been regular speculation and rumour that the character would be getting her own solo movie. Many years ago, David Hayer, who has worked on scripts for the likes of X-MEN, X-MEN 2 and WATCHMEN, was attached to write and direct the Widow solo effort. Speaking to Latino Review, Hayer has been giving an update on that project.

He revealed, “For Black Widow, I wrote a script ten years ago and I was attached to direct it then. Then a few female action movies came out and they didn’t do very well. And the movie got shelved. It’s on IMDb and I’m going to talk to Marvel about possibly re-igniting that project. It really depends on Marvel and what they want to do with that character. So that’s the status of that right now.”

In regards to Hayer’s reference to IMDb, there is currently a Black Widow movie listed on there, with him attached to direct and Johansson attached to star. Of course, IMDb isn’t always the most reliable of sources. Regardless, at least the writer/director has confirmed that there is a script that is ready to go, it’s just a case of waiting for Marvel to move forward with the film.

Given how Marvel have been rumoured to be looking at a strong female-led movie, including talk of a Carol Danvers-centred film, not to mention how DC have plans for a Wonder Woman effort, could a Black Widow solo adventure get greenlit in the future? With the recent reveal that Marvel currently have SEVEN release dates booked in for upcoming movies, reaching as far as 2019, Widow must be fancying her chances.
