Black Angel, the short movie that was shown before the original release of The Empire Strikes Back when it first hit the silver screen in 1980, is to be remade into a full length motion picture with an all new cast. It will be a fantasy movie that promises to mix the high fantasy of The Lord of The Rings with the grittiness of Game of Thrones.
The project is being masterminded by Star Wars Set Designer Roger Christian, who is also known for designing the original lightsabers. Christian created the original short movie and has launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise the funds to make the full length feature. A powerful tale of ancient Celtic magic and Nordic Paganism, the story follows a knight as he journeys deep into the dark underworld with the daughter of a rival king to fight the demonic Black Angel itself.
Roger Christian won an Oscar for art direction on Star Wars: A New Hope and has secured the talents of the actors John Rhys-Davies, Rutger Hauer, and Laura Weissbecker already. The project has already been partially funded from other sources; the crowdfunding is to raise more funds in order to do more with the project.
Director, Roger Christian, said: “I wrote Black Angel as an epic adventure inspired by the great Samurai films. For the feature film I want the audience to experience the intensity of the battles where life or death is the only prize. Like the first Star Wars and Alien we are going for absolute reality, engaging the audience in the drama so they feel like they are really there in this ancient world, shot in staggeringly beautiful landscapes, ancient cities and castles. With flying demons and sorcerers, princesses and Knights, armies of the undead and an evil god of the underworld, we are filming down and dirty; ultimate realism that audiences hunger for and the world I am passionate to create on film again.”
