The CW is moving things along nicely with their ARROW spin-off, THE FLASH. It was only earlier today that we brought news of Wentworth Miller being added to the show as Leonard Snard, aka Captain Cold. Speaking at the TCA press tour (courtesy of IGN), executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, and DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns have been giving fans some in-depth details of what we can expect to see in the Scarlet Speedster show.

Describing the series as the most faithful DC adaptation to date, Johns said, “I’ve you seen the pilot and you’re a fan of the books, you know we’ve incorporated almost everything from the mythology into it and added a whole new backstory with S.T.A.R. Labs and that team incorporated that. But it’s probably the most faithful DC Comics adaptation ever, as deep as we’re going to go and as many characters we’re using, especially in the first nine episodes we’ve planned out pretty tightly.”

Now we’ve seen the pilot and it’s as brilliant as we’d been hoping. Not only that, but it’s riddled with nudges, winks and Easter eggs for long-time fans of The Flash and his world. Addressing a particular tease of Gorilla Grodd’s cage, Kreisberg said, “It’s funny, because obviously that Easter egg means the world to us. And all along the way, there are people who are less familiar with the mythology, who were, like, well, we could save ten second if we cut that. And we’re like, nnnn, you can cut anything else. You know, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is out now, and hopefully they’re doing the R&D for us so that one day we can see exactly what jumped out of that cage.”

Greg Berlanti chimed in, “Sometimes we know exactly how we’re going to pull those things off. Sometimes we don’t, but we know that we really want to. And so it’s something that inspires us to try harder and figure out a way to pull it off.”

One recent addition to the show was Robbie Amell, cousin of ARROW’s Stephen Amell, as Ronnie Raymond. In the comic books, Raymond combines with Martin Stein to become the hero Firestorm. Asked if Stein will also appear in THE FLASH, Berlanti revealed, “I think as we evolve Firestorm, definitely – you’ll meet Stein. We actually had him in a version of the pilot at one point on the train with Barry when he was coming back from Starling.”

Speaking of Starling City, the home of Oliver Queen, the question of a possible crossover between The Flash and The Arrow. Kreisberg revealed, “Episodes 8 of both shows, ARROW and FLASH, are going to be a two-hour crossover event. Also, in Episode 4, Felicity is going to come to THE FLASH.”

Bringing things to a close, the familiar question of transitioning these versions of The Flash and The Arrow to the big screen rose its head again. Johns simply stated, “We will not be integrating the film and television universe. At DC, we really see film and TV as separate worlds. ARROW and FLASH create a huge DC universe for us. And it’s going to live and breathe and grow.”

So, pretty comprehensive, right? All in all, THE FLASH is shaping up to be something special, much like how ARROW has got itself to a place where it’s must-see TV. THE FLASH debuts on The CW on Tuesday, 7th October, with Season 3 of ARROW hitting on Wednesday, 8th October. Here’s hoping UK airings will follow shortly after those dates.
