With Big Hero 6 getting the TV series treatment, Disney XD has moved to announce that the return of Baymax and Co. will launch with an hour-long TV movie.

Titled Baymax Returns, the feature will air next month ahead of Big Hero 6: The Series arriving next year. Yes, as disappointing as it may leave many, the show itself won’t hit the small screen until 2018. In between the one-long picture and the series starting, Disney XD VOD and the DisneyNOW app will showcase two preview episodes to keep fans ticking over.

The official blurb for Big Hero 6: The Series reads:

Big Hero 6: The Series picks up immediately following the events of the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning feature film and continues the adventures and friendship of Hiro, the fourteen-year-old orphaned tech genius and Baymax, his very special plus-sized inflatable healthcare companion. As the new kid at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro faces daunting academic challenges at the prestigious “nerd school” and the social trials of being the “little man on campus.” Luckily, Hiro has his brains, his ingenuity and his best friend bot to help him find his way. But it’s off campus where things get dangerous. Along with neat freak Wasabi, bubbly made scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no nonsense Go Go, the friends form an unlikely, but awesome super hero team – Big Hero 6. Together they face madness and mayhem as a colourful array of science-enhanced villains threaten San Fransokyo.

Cast-wise, Big Hero 6: The Series will see the Ryan Potter as Hiro, Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon, Jamie Chung as Go Go, Alan Tudyk as Alistair Krei, Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass, David Shaughnessy as Heatcliff, Stan Lee as Fred’s dad and Scott Adsit as Baymax. As for new additions, there’s Khary Paton and Brooks Wheelan coming to take over as Wasabi and Fred, respectively.
