For fans of Pokemon, get ready to get a little excited…

The Hollywood Reporter has word that a bidding war has exploded over the right to a live-action Pokemon film. A hush-hush auction has been held, with big guns like Sony, Warner Brothers, and Legendary all said to be in the mix.

At the moment, it seems as if Legendary is currently in pole position when it comes to securing the rights to a live-action Pokemon effort, although there could still be a few twists and turns in this one.

Pokemon itself debuted way back in 1996 and caused huge waves when the property hit the US in 1998. The basic premise of the game was that you had to catch and train all of the Pocket Monsters (abbreviated in to Pokemon). Before you know it, Pikachu was everywhere as Pokemon took over the world with a whole plethora of video games, cartoon shows, animated movies, actual trading cards, and any sort of merch you could imagine.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
