BFI's DAYS OF FEAR AND WONDER Sci-fi Season Hits the North

As part of the BFI season celebrating all things sci-fi, ‘DAYS OF FEAR AND WONDER’, a number of exciting events have been arranged in the North West in conjunction with FILM HUB NORTH WEST CENTRAL. They take place throughout October and November and include screenings in some very special venues.

Grimm Up North and Manchester Science Festival Present:
Classic Sci-Fi double bills – MoSI (Manchester) 29th- 31st October 2014

Manchester Science Festival and Grimm Up North Present: Classic Sci-Fi double bills presented at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester. There will be three classic Sci-fi movie double bills from three of the World’s most prolific science fiction directors housed in the fantastically apt setting of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.

First up is Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL and 12 MONKEYS on the 29th Oct, then Paul Verhoeven’s TOTAL RECALL and STARSHIP TROOPERS on 30th Oct, and finally Ridley Scott’s ALIEN and PROMETHEUS on 31st Oct (Halloween).

Each evening will kick off with a special introduction from guest speakers at 6.30pm. Films will start prompt 7.00pm. Tickets for each special double bill event will cost £12.50 or a three-event pass will cost £30.00. Cornerhouse Presents: Peaches Christ’s BEARBARELLA starring Lady Bear & Peaches Christ – Cornerhouse (Manchester) 9th- 11th October 2014
San Francisco drag superstar, filmmaker, and cult (movie) leader Peaches Christ returns to the UK with an out-of-this world event celebrating the 1968 sci-fi masterpiece BARBARELLA, directed by Roger Vadim. Jane Fonda got her first workout (sans spacesuit!) during the opening credits of this campy, widescreen space opera about a sexy, 41st-century adventuress.

But Peaches Christ isn’t merely screening the film, she’s inviting you to join her and her cast of drag aliens for a fully immersive and interactive experience when she presents her stage-show parody “BEARBARELLA”. Starring San Francisco’s own Lady Bear in the title role, a larger than life queen who’s tasked with saving the Queerniverse from a wicked, knife wielding villainous, “The Great Tired”, played by Peaches herself. Additional roles will be filled by fellow San Francisco bon-vivants Hugz Bunny and Shemantha, UK performers the Ultra Violets, Cheddar Gawjus and Anna Phylactic, plus guests en route. Ms. Christ would like to strongly encourage audience members to dress up in their best Barbarella inspired couture and begin practicing for the Orgasmatron Challenge where Peaches will be inviting the best dressed attendees up onstage for the chance to be publicly pleasured. The original 1968 film will screen after the 50-minute pre-show performance.

Cornerhouse Presents: Insomniac Invasion: a Sci-Fi All-Nighter – Cornerhouse, (Manchester) 15th November 2014

Cornerhouse will present an ambitious all-night screening programme to transport audiences into the weird and wonderful world of science fiction. It’ll consist of six films featuring a range of science fiction titles, including well-loved and well-known classics and lesser-seen titles. Audiences will be encouraged to settle in with us in Cinema 1 for a night of aliens, time travel, and alternate universes. Guest speakers and presenters will punctuate the event with contextualising film introductions.

The End Of The World News: Science Fiction and Apocalypse – Cornerhouse (Manchester)

It’s a classic theme of science fiction: the end of the world as we know it. Alien invasions, outbreaks of pestilence, natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and volcanoes, and – after the dropping of the atomic bomb in 1945 – man-made nuclear destruction, all feature in the bleak apocalyptic fantasies of writers, artists and filmmakers. This season of films and events explores some of the film and literature of the great science fiction age to the end of the 1960s, and shows how the fears that drive them remain current, even today.

They Eat Culture (Preston)

Future Preston Tours will transport citizens through space and time to immersive screenings (see here) in as-yet-top-secret locations. In and around the tours will be a host of participatory and performance events, including audio-visual experiences, literature, panels, talks, and workshops, all exploring themes of Future Preston, along with a further set of screenings at arts venue The Continental and a few cosmic walks on the wild side with ‘Ferret Trash Cinema’ at rock-n-roll bar The Ferret.

October and November are set to be an amazing time for Lancashire’s Sci-Fi fans and arts and culture junkies; prepare to see the Preston in a new light, straight from the future!

QUAD (Derby)

QUAD will embrace Sci-Fi for Derby audiences presenting a season of classic and rarely seen Sci-Fi films curated by QUAD and Adam Batty, Editor of Hope Lies At 24 Frames A Seconds website. QUAD’s season will be split into three covering European Auteur’s take on Sci-Fi, Hollywood Failed Franchises and the Landmarks of Sci-FI including films like FAHRENHEIT 451, JE T’AIME JE T’AIME, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, THINGS TO COME and HOWARD THE DUCK. Through this programme and the introductions and programme notes, plus coverage on both QUAD’s Fringes Blog and Adam’s influential film blog (Top 10 most influential film blogs – ebuzzing.com), QUAD aim to deepen the engagement with audiences’ connection to the genre.
