After literally every man and his dog were linked to the Doctor Strange role, now finally comes word on just who will be playing the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE. Deadline is reporting that Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, will be headlining the film.

Over the last few months, as well as Cumberbatch we’ve seen the likes of Johnny Depp, Joaquin Phoenix, Jack Huston, Oscar Isaac, Justin Theroux, Keanu Reeves, Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto, and Tom Hardy all rumoured to take on the role of the Master of the Mystic Arts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, it was said that Phoenix was close to penning a deal until his reservations about the multi-picture deal and excessive green screen work put him off. In terms of the MCU, Stephen Strange was actually name-dropped by Jasper Sitwell in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

To be directed by SINISTER’s Scott Derrickson, DOCTOR STRANGE is currently set for a July 8th, 2016 release. Now all we need is some sort of official statement from Marvel Studios and Disney that Benedict will be tackling Stephen Strange…
