There was rumblings of it late last year, and now Ben Affleck has once again stated how he won’t make a solo Batman movie unless he believes that the script is up to scratch.

Tentatively (although not officially) called The Batman, the film will see Affleck star and direct, with him also penning the screenplay with DC’s iconic Geoff Johns. As well as Affleck on board, Warner Brothers have already cast Joe Manganiello as the villain of the picture, Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke. But still, Affleck has once more reiterated that he won’t be making the film unless he feels that the script is truly great.

Speaking to The Guardian about directing The Batman, he said, “That’s the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”

With the Affleck/Johns script yet to come together, we’ll have to see what comes of this. To date, the first solo adventure for Affleck’s Caped Crusader has yet to be given an official release date by Warners, although Affleck himself has previously said that a spring 2017 start date is a possibility.

What’s nice to see here is the care that Ben Affleck has for the Batman character and for any adventures that he may take on. Given that Affleck is a life long Batman and comic book fan, it’s good to see that he isn’t willing to just churn out any old story just to make a quick buck. And with the prospect of him also serving as director, following his directing of Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo – plus this month’s Live by Night – it will hopefully mean that we’ll get a truly epic outing for the World’s Greatest Detective.

Up next for Affleck’s Batman is an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League this coming November, and in that movie we’ll also see the debut of J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, who will then appear in any future Bat outings.
