Now that the smoke has started to settle after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s opening weekend, the box office figures are starting to come in for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up. The film was always going to open to big business, and that’s certainly the case here.

With a North American return of $166.1 million and an international return of $254 million, the worldwide box office for the film currently sits at an impressive $420.1 million. These figures mark Batman v Superman as the largest North American pre-summer opening, the largest Easter opening, the largest DC-based opening, and the biggest March opening ever. The film also goes down as the seventh-highest North American box office of all time.

Internationally, Dawn of Justice’s $254 million marks it as the biggest superhero opening weekend ever, the biggest ever March opening, and Warner Brothers’ second-highest international opening of all time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

As mentioned, the film was always going to open big, and it just remains to be seen what the final box office figures will show. Also, given that the film has received a massively varied response from fans and critics, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of drop off we’ll see when next week’s figures come out.
