To many a STARBURST reader, one of the most hotly-anticipated movies of 2016 is the animated adaptation of the fan-favourite Batman tale, The Killing Joke.

Whilst we’ve all been eagerly awaiting Batman: The Killing Joke, which will also be R-rated, a release date had yet to be confirmed. Until now, that is.

According to Amazon, the animated outing, which is based on one of the very finest Batman stories, one which is often labelled as the definitive Joker tale, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in the US on August 23rd. Before that, the movie will be released on Digital HD on July 23rd.

With Kevin Conroy once again in the Batsuit, and with Mark Hamill returning as The Joker, anticipation is high as fans look forward to seeing this animated adaptation of one of DC’s most famous stories. Initially released in 1988, The Killing Joke gave fans an origin story of sorts for the Clown Prince of Crime, but it was his actions in the present-day that gave Mr. J a clinical, maniacal edge that had rarely been seen up until that point. In the book, The Joker has Jim Gordon in his sights, kidnapping and torturing him. Even more shocking, as part of his attack on Gordon, the Harlequin of Hate shoots Barbara Gordon through the spine, leaving her paralyzed as a result. From The Killing Joke onwards, The Joker was seen as a more crazed and brutal villain than ever before, with this move made in order to bring some serious menace to a character who at that point in time was often thought of as Cesar Romero-type.

Unfortunately, Batman: The Killing Joke has yet to get a confirmed UK release, but we’ll bring you details on that as and when we get it.
