A24 has revealed the eerie first footage for the horror feature Backrooms, which adapts Kane Parsons’ YouTube series of the same name. The film centres on two people who find a mysterious door in the basement of a furniture showroom, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsfve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennet, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.

“I found something,” Ejiofor is heard saying in the teaser trailer’s voiceover. “I found a place. It’s massive in there and just goes on and on and on. All these rooms, this place builds them. Actually, more like it remembers them, and the more times it remembers something, the less it does.”

A24 and The North Road Company’s Chernin Entertainment are co-financing the film, which also counts 21 Laps Entertainment and Atomic Monster as producers.

Parsons is making his feature directorial debut from a script by Will Soodik. The story, as previously stated, is inspired by Parsons’ viral horror series, itself based on the Backrooms urban legend and creepypasta.

Simply explained, The Backrooms are an endless, liminal space accessed by “no-clipping” out of reality. It is characterised by unsettling, empty office-like environments with damp carpets, yellow walls, and buzzing fluorescent lights. They are viewed as as a dimension separate from our own, filled with both mundane and terrifying elements, and potentially inhabited by entities.

Backrooms releases in cinemas from May 29th. Watch the teaser trailer below:
