The complete two seasons of obscure cult ‘70s TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep is heading to DVD in the UK for the first time.

The official line on the release is:

The show is loosely based on Boyington’s bestselling 1958 autobiography, Baa Baa Black Sheep. He was a United States Marine Corps fighter ace during World War II, known as “Pappy” due to his “advanced” age compared to the younger pilots under his command. (He was 30 when he took command). He received both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Boyington grew up as Gregory Hallenbeck and married shortly after graduation. He applied for flight training under the Aviation Cadet Act in 1935 but discovered it excluded married men. When he obtained a copy of his birth certificate he learnt that his father’s name was Boyington. Since there was no record that someone named Gregory Boyington had ever been married, he enrolled as U.S. Marine Corps aviation cadet using that name instead.

Many of Boyington’s men were irate over the show, as it was mostly fiction and presented a glamorized portrayal of Boyington. Boyington frequently told interviewers and audiences that the television series was fiction based on fact, calling it “hogwash and Hollywood hokum”.

The series starred Golden Globe-nominated Robert Conrad (Samurai Cowboy), James Whitmore Jr (who went on direct TV hits such as Buffy, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Quantum Leap), and Robert Ginty (The Exterminator).
