Euphoria actor Austin Abrams is in final talks to star in Sony Pictures’ and Zach Cregger’s reboot of horror actioner Resident Evil. Cregger, who broke out with Barbarian, directs the film from a script he co-wrote alongside Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Army of the Dead).
Cregger is getting ready for his follow-up to Barbarian, an ensemble horror piece titled Weapons. Austin Abrams also stars in Weapons as part of an ensemble cast that includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. He also recently produced the sci-fi thriller Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid.
The previous Resident Evil films, based on the Capcom video games, followed the adventures of a heroine who fights zombies and the Umbrella Corporation, the bio warfare company that let loose the undead. This latest film is said to have elements of a wilderness survival thriller.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Producers include Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions.
Austin Abrams was previously seen in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and opposite Brad Pitt and George Clooney in Wolfs. He also had a recurring role in seasons 5 and 6 of The Walking Dead.
This new Resident Evil is expected to begin filming in Europe this summer.
