With the Michael Fassbender-headlined Assassin’s Creed arriving in cinemas imminently, now comes word that the film will actually be the start of a trilogy.

It was Fassbender himself who revealed this news to Cinema Blend, saying, “This is sort of the origin of his story. We have an idea of where he’s going to go over the next two films. We kind of did a three-film arc. We’ll wait and see how people respond to this, but for sure we have an idea of where he’s going to go next.”

Of course, all of this will hinge on the success of the first movie in the series. The worrying issue there, though, is that big screen adaptations of video games have largely bombed as a whole over the decades. Some films have obviously fared better than others, but some of the names that come to mind when thinking of video game-driven movies are the likes of Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Doom, Hitman and this year’s Warcraft. Not all of those were total flops, but just looking at those names shows how hard it is to successfully adapt a classic video game and turn it into a successful movie.

One other potential issue for Assassin’s Creed is that it opens on December 21st in the US and some other markets, meaning that it may suffer from going up against Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the UK, we’ll see Assassin’s Creed arrive on January 1st.
