With all eyes on March 2019’s Captain Marvel, that currently-shooting film has moved to bring in a new addition in the form of Annette Bening.

As per Variety’s Justin Kroll, the American Beauty actress will be playing the mother of Brie Larson’s titular Carol Danvers, Marie Danvers. This technically isn’t Bening’s first foray into the superhero genre, with her having actually been cast to play Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. Of course, Michelle Pfeiffer would famously tackle the Selina Kyle role opposite Michael Keaton in that 1992 effort, with Bening having to drop out of the part due to pregnancy.

The early word on Captain Marvel reads:

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In addition to Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Bening joins a cast that also includes Jude Law as Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as a two-eyed Nick Fury, and Ben Mendelsohn as the villain of the piece. Interestingly, Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou will be reprising their Guardians of the Galaxy roles as Ronan and Korath, respectively, while Clark Gregg will be back as Agent Coulson.

To be directed by Mississippi Grind’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel will shoot to the silver screen next March – two months before May 2019’s Avengers: Infinity War follow-up.
