With Amy Schumer previously on board to headline a live-action Barbie film, the picture has hit a major roadblock as the comedienne has had to drop out due to the ever-familiar “scheduling conflicts.”

Variety is reporting the news, with Schumer adding, “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Despite not having a director on board, Sony’s plan was for the movie – simply titled Barbie – to start shooting this June ahead of a June 29th, 2018 release. What makes this a little more awkward for Sony is that they have to release the film on that date as it was booked in for then in order to tie in with a whole load of new merchandise created to tie in with the movie. As such, the studio is unable to move things around to match Schumer’s schedule, and instead they will now look to bring in someone else to star.

On this news, Sony said, “We respect and support Amy’s decision. We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon.”

As well as starring in the film, Schumer was also working on the script for Barbie, with the story focussing on Barbie being booted out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough. So, yes, she would indeed be a Barbie girl not in a Barbie world…

Aqua. Never forget.

As ever, expect more on Barbie as it develops as we await to see whether life in plastic really is fantastic.
