It’s being reported that Amityville Horror: The Awakening, which was due for a release next month, has been pushed all the way back to next year.

Deadline has word that the film will now open on January 6th, 2017 as oppose to April 1st of this year. The apparent reasoning behind the switch in release date is due to Weinstein Company executives and producer Jason Blum keen to follow the success of relatively recent horrors that opened to a strong box office response in January. Notable horrors that had decent showings after opening in January are the likes of The Devil Inside, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, Daybreakers, and even this year’s The Forest.

With the January 6th release date, this new Amityville movie will face box office competition from genre efforts Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Split, and the new Friday the 13th film.

When we spoke to Jason Blum late last year about what to expect from Amityville Horror: The Awakening, he said, “The new Amityville film is very original and will subvert expectations in a huge way. I’m looking forward to finally getting it out there and having people see it and talking about it once it comes out. It’s very different from what you expect.”

Whilst we’re certainly intrigued to see how The Awakening turns out, it looks as if we’ll have to wait until early next year to find out.
