James Wan’s Aquaman is close to finding its female lead!

The end of last year saw rumours suggest that Mera, the wife of the titular King of Atlantis, will have a key role to play in the Jason Momoa-starrer, and it’s now being reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Amber Heard is in talks to star opposite Momoa. Heard is probably best known to genre fans for the likes of All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and The Ward, not to mention appearances in the likes of Pineapple Express, Zombieland, Magic Mike XXL and The Danish Girl.

The character of Mera debuted way back in 1963, initially starting off as a love interest for Aquaman before going on to become his wife and the Queen of Atlantis. Previous stories suggested that Aquaman will depict Mera as a no-nonsense, strong-minded female who can look after herself, with Charlize Theron’s Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road referenced in regards to how Mera will be portrayed.

Momoa’s Aquaman will make his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25th before playing a vital role in November 2017’s Justice League: Part One and then swimming off to his own solo movie when Aquaman hits screens on July 27th, 2018. Mera is expected to make her bow in Zack Snyder’s first Justice League effort.
