From LORD OF THE RINGS to WATCHMEN, and with varying degrees of success, Hollywood has no qualms when it comes to filming what folks say can’t be filmed. Now comes word from Variety that Paramount is considering Alex Garland, who cut his teeth on upcoming sci-fi feature EX_MACHINA, to helm an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s ANNIHILATION.

The first in the masterful Southern Reach Trilogy, ANNIHILATION follows Ghost Bird, a biologist who is sent into an environmental anomaly to make sense of what has happened to her husband. Garland will be adapting and developing the book.

It’s either incredibly ambitious or foolhardy to adapt a book that relies on its journal-style format, its power rooted in language, and the fallibility of the written word. That’s not to say that the book won’t translate to film, but it’d be a shame to shoot such a clever and affecting book as just a disaster movie. Given his work on MONSTERS, we’d like to see Gareth Edwards give it a go if Garland pulls out.

More details as we hear them.
