Magician, writer and owner of one of the world’s most impressive beards, Alan Moore has completed the first draft of his second prose-only novel, JERUSALEM. His daughter, Leah Moore, has told social media that the book comes in at over a million words. That’s one third the length of the Wheel of Time series, or just under twice the length of War and Peace.

The author, best known for his seminal comic book work including V FOR VENDETTA, THE WATCHMEN and TOM STRONG has been working on the novel since 2008. The book will focus of a small area in Moore’s home town of Northampton.  It has been described as a blend of fantasy and history, with one chapter rumoured to involve Moore’s brother drifting off into the fourth dimension, whilst the middle section has been hyped as a savage and hallucinatory take on Enid Blyton.

Moore’s first novel, VOICE OF THE FIRE, was also set in Northampton. When it came out in 1996, it was applauded for its complex storytelling. It is also notoriously difficult to get into and it does sound like JERUSALEM will be similarly dense.  The new novel still needs to copy-edited, and there is no schedule for release as yet; a work this large may be in production for quite some time.

Moore has gloated in the past that the work will be ‘cripplingly heavy’ and we can only hope that an e-book version will be available for those of us who like to read on the train. We can’t wait, and we will be getting the bookshelves in STARBURST Towers reinforced, just in case.
