Considering that last year’s movie took over $1 billion at the global box office, it’s not entirely surprising to now hear that an Aladdin sequel has been made official.

First reported by Variety, Disney has greenlit this follow-up – which will be based on a story by Flight’s John Gatnis and Straight Outta Compton’s Andrea Berloff.

Despite previous rumblings, this Aladdin sequel will not be any form of adaptation of the animated Return of Jafar. Instead, producer Dan Lin has spent the past six months of so trying to put together a satisfactory premise for the movie. And that’s where Gatnis and Berloff have come in.

Director Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott are not contracted to return for any such Aladdin 2, although the belief is that the powers-that-be at Disney are keen for all four to be a part of this sequel.

To clarify, this Aladdin 2 is not to be confused with the spin-off offering centred on Billy Magnussen’s Prince Anders. That spin-off is a separate project that will be housed on Disney+.
