STARBURST is devastated to learn that Adam West, best known to a generation as Batman in the 1960s TV series has passed away at the age of 88.

Born William West Anderson in 1928, the actor’s career span six decades. After appearing in several TV series such as Perry Mason and The Outer Limits, he found worldwide fame as the Caped Crusader in the much-loved Batman series. Alongside Burt Ward, they became the definitive Batman and Robin for many, despite (or perhaps because of) the show’s campy qualities.

According to his biography, West was offered the role of James Bond in Diamonds are Forever, but refused as he saw the role being for a British actor.

Although he was forever synonymous with his Batman character, he kept his career going with movie and TV appearances, but kept returning to the role that made him a household name, most recently with the animated film The Return of the Caped Crusaders, which reunited him with Ward as his sidekick Robin.

He was also a regular on animated series such as Family Guy (in which he was the town’s mayor) and The Simpsons, and Spongebob Squarepants (playing Mermaid Man with Burt Ward being Barnacle Boy).  He will be greatly missed by fans all over the world.

STARBURST’s thoughts are with Adam’s family and friends.
