“This book has been two years in the planning. It’s in memory of my mum, Janet, who died in 2009 after having Alzheimer’s for six years.

I don’t think she ever understood my love of Doctor Who. Surely her strongest memory would have been of me, standing at the top of the stairs, crying about how the “jelly men” were going to get me. Without wishing to give away my age, I have a suspicion that my childish brain muddled up Zygons and a part-transformed Noah in The Ark In Space.

So, as I watched her get more and more ill, I determined to do something about it. In part, I was inspired by a tribute book to Roy Castle, issued after his death, which collected happy memories from his friends and colleagues. Everyone has a memory of Doctor Who, right? Except maybe anyone who grew up between 1996 and 2005. And, since so many celebrity “Whovians” have sung the programme’s praises after Russell T Davies magnificently midwifed it back to Saturday nights, where it belongs, I figured they wouldn’t mind sharing the reasons why.

What is probably most surprising is the number of really quite well known celebrities who have, and I quote, “never seen an episode”. The well-read TV presenter dating a comedian who went to a fancy dress party dressed as Tom Baker! The Twitter-addicted sitcom writer. The genius Star Wars-obsessed actor and impressionist. Who would have believed it?”
