COMIC BOOK REVIEW: ZARJAZ 23 / AUTHOR: VARIOUS / ARTIST: VARIOUS / PUBLISHER: THE QUAEQUAMBLOG / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Zarjaz 23 is the latest release of the 2000AD fanzine edited by Dave Evans and Richard Clements. Although not for profit, there is no suggestion this is anything but a professional publication.

The latest Zarjaz totals 48 pages of black and white strips and it is interesting to note the content is dominated by tales of Mega-City One despite the vintage of Judge Dredd and its spin-offs.

The opening story gives readers the chance to enjoy Judge Andersen of Psi Division in an adventure that would be right at home in the pages of 2000AD, except perhaps some of the faces would benefit from better delineation. There is plenty of action and an authentic feel to the plot.

Judge Andersen is followed by a short story about cadet judges drawn in a very dark style, contrasting well with the opener. The quality continues with a more comic tale, The Ballad of Phat Toone; fun but maybe too much of a change of pace from the first two stories.

Next, back to Mega-City One for a showdown between Dredd and Hershey, no less. An interesting story, though the illustration could be more sophisticated. Grips are put to one side with the next story, Tales of Mega City One: Partners, which shows us the tension between being a judge and being human.

After a detour to the world of robots and warfare with lots of singing, the collection ends with a look at what Dredd does on a day off.

It may be fan-fiction, but for £3 this is worth a look.
