Comic Review: Fanboys vs. Zombies #1 / Writer: Sam Humphries / Illustrator: Jerry Gaylord / Publisher: Boom! / Release Date: Out Now

Riding the zombie wave (or rather the waves of zombies), Fanboys vs. Zombies is the latest addition to the comic undead genre.

As you might have guessed from the title, it’s aimed at the fanboys (and girls). One of the first things you notice about Gaylord’s animation is that it’s very Chew-esque, which is a good thing, but it all seems a bit too colourful and cutesy for a zombie apocalypse.

The plot is quite thin – a group of friends (and a couple of enemies) known as ‘The Wrecking Crew’ meet up at the San Diego comic con, and end up fighting for their lives. There’s protagonist Rob, bitter at his former friend Kyle for stealing his girlfriend Jenna. They’re joined by Kyle’s free-spirited loudmouth sister Jenna, vain muscleman J-Mac, and Rob’s obligatory humorous fat friend Burger.

The characters are hardly original, but issue #1 introduces them all and lays out a brief back history.  You then have the cause of the apocalypse – a rather humorous in-joke about comic conventions, and a couple of pages of zombies later and it’s finished.

Hardly The Walking Dead, but harmless fun – more like zombies for tweens. Not the kind of comic you’ll be dying (pardon) to read the next issue of.
