Two years ago, Graeme Reynolds introduced his High Moor series to critical acclaim. Here was a book that took us back to the roots of horror and made werewolves scary once again, a none-too-gentle reminder of why we fell in love with the genre in the first place. And we’re very pleased to report that the sequel to High Moor, Moonstruck, continues along the same vein.
After Malcolm’s rampage at the end of the last novel and John Simpson’s subsequent incarceration, the werewolf community send a crack squad of hit-men to mop up the loose ends and put Simpson out of his misery once for all. The clock’s ticking though; if Simpson changes while under lock and key the truth about werewolves will be revealed to the world at large.
What follows is an explosive, in your face, werewolf extravaganza that offers violence and gore by the bucket-load, but also weaves a great story with compelling characters. One of which is Connie: a dark and utterly unrepentant character that would give the Governor from The Walking Dead a run for his money. There’s a scene with Connie that will forever resound through the blood-drenched halls of horror, living on in infamy long after we’ve all shuffled off this mortal coil.
The author manages to pull off that most rare of beasts and offers us a sequel better than the original. With the High Moor series, Reynolds moves the genre of horror back onto the path it has recently stumbled from. It offers a fresh new voice in the world of emerging British talent and a reminder of why werewolves are supposed to be scary.
