Production and distribution company GKIDS has announced it has acquired the UK and Ireland distribution rights to Studio Ghibli’s 23-film library. They include Oscar winners Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron, Academy Award-nominated titles like Howl’s Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, as well as beloved classics Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki’s Delivery Service.
The first theatrical release under this new deal will be the IMAX re-release of Kiki’s Delivery Service from August 21st. Coming later will be The Secret World of Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart. GKids plans to roll out further titles of the new Studio Ghibli 4K Remasters in IMAX and on physical media from this autumn onwards.
GKids has long been home to Studio Ghibli in North America, handling distribution across all platforms. However, the U.K. and Ireland deal excludes streaming rights, which are licensed to Netflix outside North America and Japan.
“We promise U.K. and Irish fans that we will take loving care of the Ghibli catalog, beginning with the Imax release of Kiki’s Delivery Service this summer, and expand from there across all home video and digital platforms,” said David Jesteadt, president of GKids. “Our deep thanks to our longtime friends at Goodfellas for entrusting us with these masterpieces and to everyone at Studio Ghibli for their continued trust and support.”
