Since 1980, The Buxton Fringe has brought amazing fringe shows to Derbyshire, England. This year’s Fringe runs from July 3rd to the 21st and will host shows you can’t find anywhere else. We took a quick look at some shows that might appeal to STARBURST readers.
Tiptree: No-One Else’s Damn Secret But My Own
James Tiptree Jr was a celebrated a science fiction author whose life ended in tragedy. Tiptree was the pen name of Alice Sheldon, a fact that, once revealed, rocked the sexist SF community. Jenny Rowe’s stunning one-woman show is a deep dive into the life of this celebrated SF novelist and explores themes of love, feminism, gender, depression and grief. This show is also part of the science fiction convention, Glasgow 2024.
The Temple
Michael Sabbaton is the master of one-man shows that explore themes of cosmic horror, combining incredible soundscapes and staging to create something truly unique.
The Temple is the tale of a cursed First World War U-boat crew that discovers incredible and impossible things beneath the sea. It is a must-see for fans of horror theatre. Watch the trailer here.
Music & Myth (Legends From The Celtic Isles)
And now for something completely different; celebrated musician Jon Pickard uses music and video to convey audiences back to ancient times. Winner of the Solo Instrumental Fringe Award 2021, lovely music and visuals tell ancient tales in a way reminiscent of the past. You can find out more about Jon and his harp guitar here.
Edy Hurst’s Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Himself
Edy Hurst’s latest comedy show uses ’90s bangers and a huge cauldron to explore modern concerns. A look into both neurodivergence and the Lancashire witch trials by way of the Vengaboys, Hurst is one of the hottest comedy acts on the scene today. Annie & Angela’s Dumbgenz & Dragqueenz
Described as a musical comedy that journeys into Swords and Sassery, join Anne and Angela as they enter a parallel dimension. Hilarity ensues. Expect camp, genre-friendly silliness.
