Superman is canonically bisexual! Come November 9th, it will be revealed that DC Comics’ (pride) flagship superhero is bisexual, in the upcoming issue Superman: Son of Kal-El. 

The current Superman – who began his tenure this July – is Jonathan Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. In the previewed panels from the comics, we meet Kent’s love interest: Jay Nakamura, a reporter (obviously!). This #5 issue will show Jon and Jay’s college friendship turn romantic after Nakamura takes care of Superman, who is struggling and burned out from the pressures of wearing the cape. Nakamura is also revealed to have powers.

Writer Tom Taylor states that “Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”

“We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms,” said DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher, Jim Lee. “We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”

Portraying Superman as bisexual is not the only way in which the character has been updated to our times: recent issues have seen him protesting the deportation of refugees, intervene in a high school shooting, and struggle to put out wildfires (whose cause is linked back to the climate crisis).

And Jon Kent won’t be alone. Earlier this year, it was also announced that Robin would have a boyfriend, while the mantle of Captain America will be passed on to a gay character, Aaron Fischer.
