The Big Short
The movie is based on the nonfiction book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis. It tells three different stories that are somewhat connected by their actions leading up to the housing market crash in 2007. The main characters are played by Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, and Steve Carell, and the film is especially noted for having celebrities like Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez, and Richard Thaler break-in and explaining financial terms in a more understandable way.
American Psycho
This is a classic must-see movie starring Christian Bale, also known for his performance as Batman. In American Psycho Christian Bale plays the violent investment banker Patrick Bateman. Alongside being a rich and successful man, he also finds joy in killing his lovers and other people he comes to know. American Psycho is a satirical slasher film adaption of the Bret Easton Ellis novel with the same name. Many would argue that there is not much finance in the film, however, it does show the surreal world behind the society’s elite.
Wolf of Wall Street
Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie’s impressive acting is one of the things that makes this movie so great. It is a fan favourite and everyone is mesmerized by the story of Jordan Belfort, played by DiCaprio. The movie is based on real events and follows Belfort as he goes from being a small businessman with a low income to a successful stockbroker. In the beginning, he and his friends start a company in their garage where they are taught the art of persuading and selling over the phone.
Margin Call
Many will name this the most financially accurate movie on this list as it follows a 24-hour session of life on Wall Street. Here we follow a firm on the verge of disaster. The movie includes risky trading of instruments they have little understanding for themselves, as well as the many reckless choices made by large banks right before the financial crisis in 2008.
