We here at STARBURST love a good shark film. Hell, we even love a bad shark film. So with that said, the long-mooted big screen adaptation of Steve Alten’s MEG has had our attention since things started to move forward on that front last year. And now comes news of a potential director for the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Cool Runnings and National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub is in talks to direct MEG. As reported last summer, Eli Roth was the man initially being looked at to bring the adaptation to cinema screens, but the Hostel helmer left the project due to budget reasons. At that point, rumours were that it would’ve cost nearly $100 million to get Roth’s vision of the tale made.

Last year, a script was in place for MEG courtesy of Dean Georgaris, and the plan was for Warner Brothers to move forward with the adaptation as a priority following the success of Jurassic World.

In case you’re not familiar with MEG, Steve Alten’s MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror was released in 1997 and has spawned several follow-ups, with the action focussing on the 80-foot megalodon and the tale often described as “Jurassic Park with a shark” as the California coast is terrorised by this ancient threat.
