For us fans of the first JJ Abrams helmed STAR TREK movie, there has been a frustrating lack of information revealed about its sequel, which has been subject to delays whilst they get the script right. It seems now they’ve cracked it, and production is starting to ramp up with a shooting date set for January 2012.

Now Variety is reporting that JJ Abrams is looking at casting Benicio Del Toro as a villain in the sequel. In typical Abrams fashion there is no further news about the role and a veil of secrecy surrounds the whole thing. What we do know is that the screenplay is again by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and that the cast that made up the enterprise crew are all back.

The internet is currently running wild with speculation about who Del Toro might play. Would he be a Klingon? Will he be Khan (hopefully not)? Or a brand new character?

Del Toro is a brilliant actor that does not seem to have been given the breaks he should have in recent years. In the few roles he has played he has been utterly awesome and after THE WOLFMAN it seems that he may be keen on taking a few more commercial roles to keep himself in the public consciousness.
