It is award season at the moment, and six books published in 2014 have been shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. The final six were chosen from a list of 107 individual eligible works.

– EUROPE IN AUTUMN – Dave Hutchinson (Solaris)

– MEMORY OF WATER – Emmi Itäranta (HarperVoyager)

– THE FIRST FIFTEEN LIVES OF HARRY AUGUST – Claire North (Orbit)

– STATION ELEVEN – Emily St John Mandel (Picador)

Book lovers will note that this is an absolutely amazing selection. Those looking for a science fiction reading list for the summer months may want to treat themselves to the works on this list.

The winner of the award receives £2015 and the award itself, an engraved commemorative bookend.

Award Director Tom Hunter said: “A good shortlist isn’t a statement about what you should like, it’s an invitation to go beyond the limits of what you already know so you can experience and enjoy something new. Why limit an appreciation of a literature that’s built on the power of human imagination?”

The judges are selected from members of the British Science Fiction Association, the Science Fiction Foundation and the SCI-FI-LONDON film festival. The awards ceremony itself will take place on May 6th in Foyles Bookshop, London.

The award was established by a generous grant from Sir Arthur C. Clarke in 1987. It exists to promote science fiction in Britain, and is currently administered by a voluntary organisation called the Serendip Foundation. A total of 36 different publishing houses and imprints proposed work to the foundation. More information can be found here.
