When genre shows prove successful, it’s a safe bet there’ll be more doled out, post-haste. Following the success and critical acclaim of ORPHAN BLACK, BBC America is adding another genre show to its schedule.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the network has given the go ahead to THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. The show is written by Ashely Pharaoh and Matthew Graham, who were both core parts of the team behind LIFE ON MARS and its lesser sequel, ASHES TO ASHES.

THE LIVING AND THE DEAD is a six part series, set in England’s sleepy Somerset, 1888. The plot itself follows a community verging on a significant change between the traditional and the industrial, inevitable scientific future in a land populated by ghosts, myths and demons. The main character, Nathan Appleby, is a farmer desperate to prove the existence of an afterlife.

Pharaoh and Graham, in a joint statement, said of the show it will be "moving, tender, sensual ... and very, very scary.”

Filming is slated to start next year, with casting expected to begin as soon as possible.
