Steven Moffat Talks DOCTOR WHO / SHERLOCK Crossover

In news which will appease fans hungering for the famed renegade Time Lord running into Benedict Cumberbatch’s high functioning sociopath, Steven Moffat has stated his desire to have a crossover. However, the possibility of it occurring is admittedly unlikely.

Whilst speaking in a Q&A session in Cardiff, the showrunner of both hit BBC programmes answered a number of questions relating to WHO’s future, giving this rather interesting answer to a crossover:

“Look, I’m going to come clean on this: I would… Go speak to Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue, OK? They’re all in the way. I’m not the killjoy, it’s that lot. It’s probably not going to happen.”

While Moffat stated that such a crossover would occur were the move purely up to him, he did concede that his co-workers were probably right on this matter. Handling such a crossover would be a difficult task, and he admitted that such an idea would likely never live up to the hype or the image in fans’ minds. Moffat went so far to admit that, “They’d just both go off in opposite corners and sulk that there was someone cleverer than them.”

This is also skipping the obvious differences in how the creators approach each show. While SHERLOCK remains semi-grounded, DOCTOR WHO has taken the high adventure themes of the series up to eleven over the past few years. Keeping the two from being thematically on the level for even a one shot would be quite a task, least it end with Sherlock attempting to save the universe from a time vortex.

This is also not the first time the show has pushed for a true television crossover with another franchise. Past efforts date all the way back to the late seventies, with various groups pushing to have the Doctor (and the Daleks) appears in BLAKE’S 7. More recent examples included Russell T Davies having admitted considering a crossover with STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE.

Even with the possibility of a true crossover still very low, it is none the less interesting to see a subject normally limited to fanfiction or tie-in media seriously addressed by Moffat. Awesome!
