The axeman has been in action again these last few days as NBC has announced that its J.J. Abrams-produced post-apocalyptic drama Revolution will not be back for a third season in the 2014/15 schedule. The series, created by Eric (Supernatural) Kripke is set fifteen years after a permanent worldwide power blackout and the struggles of the survivors to find the cause and restore power.

Revolution debuted in September 2012 with an overnight audience of nearly 12 million tuning in to its first episode but audience numbers fell week-on-week to a low of 5.49m for the episode screened on April 29th 2013 (although the show usually posted significantly-better final time shifted numbers). Many commentators doubted the show would survive into a second season but NBC renewed the show which has fared even worse during its sophomore year with the most recent episode dropping as low as 3.78m on the overnights (a figure which might well have been the deciding factor on the show’s will-it/wont-it status over the last few months). The final episode of Revolution, which airs on Sky 1 in the UK, is expected to air in the US on May 21st.
